The Mar Thoma College Chungathara was started in 1981 by Mar Thoma Church with the vision of having a temple of learning in the educationally back-ward area of Malabar. Dr C J John who was also a former Kerala State Volleyball men team player was appointed as the first principal of our College. Before starting the regular academic classes of the College, under the leadership of Dr C J John, conducted the Calicut University (Men) Volleyball team selection trial in the College campus. That was the 1st Physical Education Programme of the College.
On 18th of January 1982, Mr. Roges Fernandez was appointed as the Lecturer in Physical Education in this College. In February 1982, the College conducted the Calicut University inter collegiate volleyball (Men) tournament. In 1983, Mar Thoma College Chungathara constructed a concrete basketball court in our campus which was the first concrete basketball court in Malappuram district. The same year our college conducted the Calicut University basketball (Men) tournament as well as the Calicut University basketball men team selection trials at our newly constructed basketball court. Mr. Roges Fernandez, Lecturer in physical education was appointed as the manager of the Calicut university basketball (Men) team.
In 1997 can be considered as the golden year in the history of the physical education department of Mar Thoma College. College stadium and new basketball concrete court (with the help of parent’s teachers association) were constructed during that year. In the same year we conducted the Calicut University inter collegiate basketball tournament for the second time in the newly constructed basketball court.
Mrs. Rojes Fernandez was retired on 31-03-2009. On 8th July 2013 Mrs. Rajesh PK appointed as the Asst. Professor in Physical Education. During this year the Department of Physical Education produced many athletes and one cricket player in Calicut University team. Muhammed Shafi VC won first place in Long jump keralotsavam state and fourth position in University Athletic Meet and Amateur athletic meet. Our College basketball (Men) team runner-up in B’zone championship cricket and table tennis (Women) team participate in Inter zone competition our College cricket (Men) participated in B’ zone championship.
The physical education department of college provides immense facilities for the physical activities of the students as well as the public. The students and the public in and around the college are utilizing the sports facilities provided by the department of physical education, which also have link with nearby educational institutions.
